Staff-Therapists:
Angie Brenner, LICSW
My name is Angie Brenner and I am a clinical social worker providing counseling to a variety of different types of clients here at Wilmington Family Counseling Services, Inca including adults, children, adolescents and couples. Thank you for taking the time to read over my profile.
I take an eclectic approach to therapy, which means that when working with clients my focus is on tailoring my approach to what works best for each individual. Some clients benefit most from a structured problem—solving style, and others from supportive insight oriented work. I often bring in elements from different psychological schools of thought including:
Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy: learning techniques to explore and change the thoughts (cognitions) underlying fears and difficult emotions:
Mindfulness: developing the ability to understand and sit with feelings without creativeness:
Play therapy with a focus on Sandtray therapy: symbolic play is the most powerful way children express what’s happening inside and work through conflicts:
Expressive therapies such as art and psychodrama: Art allows us to access things we can’t yet put into words, and role-play provides the space e to rehearse different ways of handling problems.
Dreamwork and visualization: using the symbolic language often found in dreams can be a powerful way to gain insight into the different parts of ourselves:
Psychodynamic therapies: gaining understanding of how our histories are carried inside of us and working through the past in supportive context.
Parenting work: I have also offered parenting workshops and often work with parents around developing positive parenting strategies, and in navigating the transition through stages of parenting while keeping their mental health intact.
I am always learning new things from my clients and from my own professional development, and I approach each client I meet as a unique individual with many strengths.
