Staff-Therapists:
Cecilia Hascup, MS, LMHC
Background:
I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor. I completed my undergraduate studies at Southern New Hampshire University in 2005 with my Bachelor of Arts majoring in Psychology, with a concentration in Child and Adolescent Development and a minor in Education. Shortly after graduating Southern New Hampshire University, I went on to complete my graduate degree from Salem State College, where I received my Master of Science in Counseling Psychology. I received my professional license through the Commonwealth of Mass in December.
I have actively worked in the mental health field since graduating with my Bachelor’s Degree in 2005. I began my professional career as a Residential Counselor working with Adults with acute mental illness in the community. I began my work with children in individual therapy during my graduate studies. I have continued to work with children and families since obtaining my degree in 2008 through individual, family and group treatment approaches.
Theoretical Perspective:
When working with a child or adolescent, I believe it’s important to allow the youth to feel heard and respected. I typically use the first few sessions to get to understand the presenting issue, as it is defined by the child and parent. I take my time to gather information about the family history as well as the current stressors and symptoms. Once I feel the client has gained my trust and I have learned about the presenting and historical issues, I approach treatment from a cognitive-behavioral perspective, looking at how our thoughts influence our actions and behaviors. I also use Dialectical Behavior Therapy, a format of Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, to teach self-awareness, self-regulation, and effective coping strategies.
In working with Families and Couples, I use DBT and CBT to aid the family/couple in identifying the stressors of the relationship, as well as teach them skills for more effective communication.
With regard to treating children, I believe it that it is important to work closely with the parents as well, particularly when it comes to managing issues of oppositional behavior, anxiety and depression.
