Staff-Therapists:

Donna J. Perrotta, M.Ed., LMHC  Donna J. Perrotta, M.Ed., LMHC

I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor with Certifications in School Adjustment Counseling and Cognitive Behavior Therapy.  My clients include children as young as two years old, adolescents, adults and families.  My orientation is tailored to each person’s need, but will usually include cognitive behavior therapy and play therapy when working with children.   My areas of expertise include childhood issues, family issues, trauma, depression and anxiety.

Cognitive Behavior Therapy
Cognitive Behavior Therapy is used to help the client identify what their thought process is that may be causing emotional distress.  Through reflective listening and understanding, I can help the client gain an awareness of what these thoughts are and encourage the client to challenge them.  They will begin to restructure their thinking, substituting life-enhancing thoughts and beliefs.  This process helps the client understand how to change a maladaptive action or behavior when experiencing emotional upset and distress.

Play Therapy
Play Therapy is used to help children communicate their thoughts and feelings in a safe and playful environment. The experience and understanding of a child is often communicated through play.  The child-centered or self-directed play process helps the child develop an understanding of themselves and others.  Through play, I can help the child identify positive coping skills and experience a greater sense of self-awareness when experiencing emotional upset and distress.

My Training
I received a Master of Education Degree in Mental Health Counseling and School Adjustment Counseling from Cambridge College in 2005.  I received a Certificate in Cognitive Behavior Therapy from Boston University in 2009.  I have worked at Arbour Counseling Services as a psychotherapist in the clinic and in the Malden and Everett school systems counseling children from Kindergarten through Grade 12, as well as adults and families.  At Arbour, I specialized in working with clients of all ages experiencing trauma.  I have worked as a Crisis Intervention Counselor for the Newton Public Schools counseling middle school children in crisis.  I have also worked as a Disability Counselor at North Shore Community College in Lynn, Massachusetts.
