Staff-Therapists:
Jeri Field, LICSW
I am a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker (LICSW). I received my Masters in Social Work degree from Boston University, and hold a Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study (CAGS) in Trauma from Simmons College. My primary orientation to therapy is psychodynamic; however, I make use of techniques from a variety of sources.
My expertise is in working with individual adults and couples who are struggling with symptoms that arise from having learned ineffective ways of responding to life stressors. I also have experience working with individuals and couples who identify as part of the GLBTQ community.
When I begin working with a client, my first focus is on helping the client alleviate symptoms that are interfering with the client’s ability to function well in important areas of his or her life. This may involve teaching coping skills the client can use as symptoms arise, or exploring options for making changes in the client’s environment.
The next focus of therapy is on understanding the client’s present behavior in light of the client’s previous experiences, especially in childhood. In our earliest years, we often learn ineffective, or dysfunctional, ways of responding to others as we try to protect ourselves from negative experiences. As adults, we need to learn new ways of responding in order to have healthy relationships and full and happy lives.
Change in psychodynamic therapy comes through the client’s growing understanding of the influences of the past and of the ways in which his or her choices can maintain or change the patterns in his or her life. As a therapist, I am invested in my clients’ progress and am honored to play a role in helping them create the lives they want for themselves.
