Staff-Therapists:

Karen Enegess, MA, LMHCKaren Enegess, MA, LMHC

I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor, with experience working with individuals, couples, adolescents and children from the age of 5 and up.  While my training is essentially rooted in traditional psychodynamic “talk” therapy, my approach is eclectic and tailored to the needs of the individual.  My approach is collaborative, strengths-based, and holistic, that is, I see each client as a whole person, more than any problems or diagnoses, and work together with clients toward their own goals.  I try to create a safe, supportive atmosphere where mindfulness, acceptance and compassion play a role in the growth and healing process.

I specialize in the areas of trauma/abuse, domestic violence, body image issues, substance abuse, relationship issues, grief/loss, life transition issues, as well as those who are simply feeling "stuck" and want a little guidance to create change in their lives.  I have training in body-based techniques such as EMDR, and Emotional Freedom Techniques, and if desired and appropriate can incorporate these in the healing process.  With younger children I use play therapy and various forms of expressive therapy techniques in order to facilitate their expression and healing.  With adolescents, who often are resistant to the idea of meeting with a counselor, I work to create a safe place of acceptance, and find that once teens have someone who truly listens to them without judgment, they are able to express themselves more honestly and work toward solutions.

I graduated from Lesley University in 1999, and subsequently worked in non-profit agencies providing mental health services to individuals, groups, adolescents, children, families, and couples of diverse multicultural backgrounds, including families of children at risk, and survivors of domestic violence.  Trained and certified in Post Traumatic Stress Management, I was a lead responder in the Boston area, providing community-based support following traumatic incidents.  I have provided expressive therapies groups based in dance/movement therapy to toddlers and preschoolers with The Boston Children’s Foundation and Project Joy.I have supervised interns in graduate training, and teach in the graduate program at Lesley University.  I have been in private practice in the Boston area since 2003, a staff clinician at Wilmington Family Counseling Services since 2007, and President of the Mass. Mental Health Counselors Association for the year of 2009-10.  Certified as a Kripalu yoga teacher and long-time yoga practitioner, I consistently maintain my own yoga and mindfulness practice in my life.  This practice informs my clinical work, often incorporating  philosophy and techniques from yoga and mindfulness practices.
