Staff-Therapists:
Karen Voorhees, LMHC
I received a graduate degree in Clinical Psychology from the University of Hartford in 1997. My areas of interest in graduate school were psychopharmacology, Post-traumatic stress disorder in children, and mood disorders such as Depression and Bi-polar Disorder.
I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor with a combination of Solution Focused and Cognitive Behavioral orientation to psychotherapy. I also believe that most psychotherapy needs to contain some Psychodynamic theory and practice in order to be successful.
I started out my post graduate career working with adolescent girls for five years in a group home setting. During that time I also saw individuals and families in a community mental health agency. I continued my work in residential settings for six more years, with one year in a program for adults with eating disorders, and five years in a different group home for adolescents. I always maintained direct clinical services in a mental health agency in addition to my work in residential management.
I specialize in adolescent issues, but have a fair amount of experience treating both kids over five years old as well as adults, couples and families. I work with the client to identify the problem and help them to discover the origin of the issues and how those factors may be keeping the client from moving forward in a positive direction. I then work with the client to come up with solutions to move forward. I believe that some issues can be resolved in a limited number of sessions, and some issues require a longer term approach to psychotherapy.
