Creative Solutions to Common Problems
I am a solution oriented psychotherapist and life coach who facilitates creative solutions to common emotional and behavioral problems. I develop customized solutions based on a client’s particular circumstances: unique problem, needs, goals, urgency, resources, past accomplishments, support systems, honesty, capacity to take responsibility, openness to learning, and motivation to change. Additionally, I help clients break stuck patterns or cycles as well as teach new skills, behaviors and ways of thinking. I view the therapeutic relationship as a partnership that requires persistence and hard work from both parties. I'm always aware that clients typically spend only one hour with me on a weekly basis, but six days and 23 hours outside the session. Thus I often assign homework to my client to learn new concepts, practice techniques or utilize some of the tools I have provided for him or her. The more homework a client completes the quicker his/her goals are reached and the quicker he/she feels better. Some clients have a breakthrough in just one session.
Background
I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LICSW) with over 16 years experience as a mental health provider. In addition to private practice, I serve or have served as a psychotherapist/counselor/consultant for Winchester Hospital, Emerson Hospital, North Shore Medical Center, Lawrence General Hospital, Holy Family Hospital and McLean Hospital. In addition to my clinical experience, I have over 10 years experience providing consultative services to Chief Executive Officers and Marketing Directors at financial institutions and health care companies. I am a member of the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) and adhere to their Code of Ethics (http://www.socialworkers.org/pubs/code/code.asp)
I am a graduate of Boston College School of Social Work, College of the Holy Cross and Phillips Exeter Academy.
I am a former baseball and hockey player, habitual exerciser, avid reader, political science enthusiast, a movie buff and fan of the Boston sports scene. I often discuss with my patients books, movies, current affairs and sporting events that have valuable life lessons, may be relevant to treatment or are simply interesting or entertaining.
My Treatment Approach
I have a direct, friendly approach and a sense of humor. I am an excellent listener, active participant, compassionate, passionate about helping people, optimistic, pleasantly persistent and practice what I preach. I believe that my ultimate value is in asking the right questions, watching and listening for real answers and providing straightforward feedback so that I can assist clients in resolving his or her problems and ultimately improve his or her quality of life. As much as I am a proponent of formal education, I am an advocate of informal education/self-education and "learning for life."
You can expect a safe and confidential environment in which to share, an objective perspective, respect, warmth, a non-judgmental attitude and handouts/literature to supplement the therapy.
I treat adults, teenagers, children, couples and families and have experience working with a wide range of emotional, behavioral, interpersonal and substance abuse problems. I have also helped clients improve performance and interpersonal relationships in the workplace, address career dissatisfaction and/or make career changes. I utilize the following forms of treatment: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Solution Focused Brief Therapy, Neuro-linguistic Programming, Self-psychology, Supportive Therapy, Insight Oriented Therapy, Systems Theory and Buddhist Psychology.
